Library Assistant I - Alaska State Library's Talking Book Center
Anchorage - Web posted July 27th 2010

Position ID Number: 05-3091 - Closes at 5:00PM on Friday August 6th.

Job Description:
Do you enjoy working directly with library patrons?

Do you believe in providing the best possible customer service you can?

Are you experienced with computers, Microsoft Office programs, the Internet, and using media software and equipment?

Would you like a job in a friendly downtown location that pays you to talk to patrons about what they want to read and then searching for and suggesting titles or authors they might enjoy?

The Alaska State Library’s Talking Book Center is recruiting for a full-time Library Assistant I. The Talking Book Center is located in downtown Anchorage, within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops. We work in a friendly office with a staff of eleven other employees of the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.

The Talking Book Center is a small unit, with two full-time employees (one Library Assistant I and one Library Assistant II) supervised by a librarian. The Center circulates audio books and provides other library services to 1,100 patrons living with visual and physical disabilities across Alaska. We are proud that more than 98% of our patrons consistently rate the overall service they receive from staff of the Talking Book Center as excellent or good.

The person in this position will spend half of each day working directly with patrons who are visually or physically handicapped to such a degree that they cannot read standard print. Patron service duties are provided by phone, e-mail, and in person and include: signing new patrons up for service, providing reader advisory services to help patrons decide what they would like to read next, selecting audio books for patrons based on their reading profiles, and helping patrons with their cassette and digital book players.

The person in this position can expect to spend two to three hours each day maintaining the audio book collection. Duties include: checking in and inspecting audio books to make sure the tapes are rewound and that all the media have been returned for each title, shelving audio books and large print books, processing and adding new audio books to our online catalog, adding large print books to our paper catalog, weeding older copies of audio books, and preparing monthly circulation reports drawn from our catalog.

This position spends nearly three to four hours each week helping to manage the collection of cassette and digital book players and other equipment we provide our patrons and to provide back-up for the office receptionist. Equipment management duties include: replacing and recharging batteries in cassette and digital book players, listing and shipping out broken machines for repair, and running periodic inventory reports on both types of players. During leave periods taken by the receptionist, this person will provide telephone coverage for the office and will perform basic computer network maintenance tasks under close direction.

The person in this position will be supervised by a librarian, but must be able to work closely with and take direction from the Library Assistant II, who oversees the daily operation of the Center. Other periodic duties include providing assistance with special projects such as recording the biennial election pamphlets, doing special mail-outs to patrons, and staffing the Talking Book Center booth at conferences and other events.

The Talking Book Center has an automated circulation system. This position will use the circulation system for daily library operations (checking audio books in and out and adding new patrons to the database) and will also use the system to generate periodic management reports, such as lists of overdue books by patron name, circulation statistics, and for other management reports. A willingness to learn this system and to work cooperatively with the Library Assistant II on generating reports are essential. Knowledge of computers, the Internet, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, and the ability to manage media files and equipment are important attributes for this position.

We want to hire a person with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Highly developed public service skills, with an emphasis on providing outstanding  customer service on a daily basis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of challenges that people with disabilities face every day.
  • Ability to work independently on daily activities and to work cooperatively on larger projects.
  • Ability to perform accurate record keeping with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with library services and programs.
  • Knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office software, and the ability to search the Internet efficiently.
  • Ability to manage media, such as downloading, recording, posting, and sharing media files.
  • Enjoyment of reading and knowledge of popular titles and genres, such as romances, westerns, and mysteries.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED certificate
AND either
One year of advanced level clerical work reviewing and processing documents which requires knowledge, understanding, and the ability to apply appropriate criteria, rules, regulations, and policies and procedures. The required experience includes work such as Administrative Clerk III or Human Resource Assistant with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Two years of journey level clerical office experience in a library or archive. The required experience is met by service as an Administrative Clerk II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Post secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month) in any field may substitute for the required experience.
