[Catalog List] Survey: Cataloging Training for 2011 in Alaska

Hello Catalogers, I would like to survey all Alaska libraries on cataloging training. I just sent it out on the general AkLA listserv in order to reach a wider audience. I want to make sure no one misses out, so no apologies for cross-posting. Members of the Alaska Library Association Cataloging Roundtable have expressed a strong interest in workshops on subject cataloging for 2011, such as Library of Congress subject headings and perhaps additional training on classification (LC and/or Dewey). Subject cataloging was requested in previous surveys. Only one record per language of descriptive cataloging is allowed for each manifestation of a title. When searching WorldCat, if the matching record is cataloged in a language other than that used by your library, your library may enter a parallel record in your language of descriptive cataloging. When using an existing record for copy cataloging, however, do not change the language of cataloging if upgrading the Master Record unless the code in field 040 subfield b does not correctly reflect the language of the record. [Catalog List] Greeting to AkLA Catalogers in 2010

Hello Catalogers, I am happy to serve as this years Chair of the AkLA Cataloging Roundtable. A big thank-you goes to our out-going Chair, Julie Niederhauser, for her work this past year and for her success in obtaining an Alaska Interlibrary Cooperative Grant for the serials cataloging workshop to be held in Anchorage this June. (By the way, you may apply for travel money.) There are several things to watch out for in the coming year. At the AkLA 2010 Conference in Anchorage we will have a speaker, Nancy MacKay, whose interests lie in oral history and in various areas of librarianship besides cataloging. This should be of interest to those planning on organizing oral history projects. And, if all goes as it seemsand we never knowthe year 2010 could be the big year for RDA, Resource Description and Access, the successor to AACR2. Currently, LC is spearheading an RDA test cataloging project which should be evaluated later this year. I hope to see you all at the Conference in Anchorage this March.
