CATALOGS OF HOLDINGS ONLINE

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) has received a grant to create an
online catalog of its archival and ethnographic collections and to catalog its
book holdings in an online library database.

The project is a huge step forward in making the institute’s
materials more accessible to the public, said SHI Archivist Zachary Jones,
noting for the first time a
full listing of SHI’s collections will be available via the Internet.

“This is going to transform the way we operate, up our
effectiveness and hopefully bring more people in and serve people
better,” Jones said.

“It allows us to let people know in a more effective way what we
have and to bring them in here. We want people to use our materials. The most
important part about having these great collections is getting people to use
them,” he said

To get a sense of SHI’s collections, patrons currently must
contact Jones directly or go to SHI’s Juneau office to peruse catalogs of
the institute’s holdings, which include more than 5,000 publications,
approximately 20,000 photographic images, roughly 1,000 cultural objects,
nearly 2,500 media items, and more than 750 linear feet of manuscript material
that document the history, culture, heritage, and language of the Tlingit,
Haida, and Tsimshian people of Southeast Alaska.

The two-year, $148-thousand grant from the Institute of Museum
and Library Services (IMLS) will allow people to search SHI’s archival
and ethnographic holdings on the Internet by using keywords or browse searching
for authors and subjects. The archival catalog will give descriptions of the
materials, but people still will have to go to the institute’s office to
view the collections.

SHI’s book holdings will be cataloged in the online Capital Cities

Center, a catalog that is shared by
the Juneau Public Library, the Alaska State Library, the University
of Alaska/Southeast, and other
libraries in the Juneau
City and Borough area.
The institute eventually will post links to the databases on its website at www.sealaskaheritage.org.

1. Remind me again, please - what is the Clearinghouse?

The Rural Library Resources Clearinghouse is an online archive to help California rural public libraries serve their users more efficiently. By providing examples of commonly needed documents, materials and programs in all aspects of library operations, the Clearinghouse benefits rural libraries by eliminating the need to "reinvent the wheel" for every new policy, practice, procedure or project needed locally.

Although developed for use by California rural libraries, any library is welcome to visit and use www.resourceroundup.net!

************************************************************************

2. New and Noteworthy Links

Some helpful California-generated information caught the eye recently. These have now been added to resourceroundup.net.

"Possible Software Solutions for Libraries" is a summary done by Lori Bowen Ayres. It started out as a survey about accounting software but goes beyond and lists other kinds of management software (calendar, facilities management, IT Help Desk, e.g.). While perhaps a work in progress, it's a good starting point for library administrators looking for software for specific purposes. Found in the Funding & Budgeting area of the Library Administration section.

Hot off the press is a new study (2/08) titled" Internet Filtering Software Tests: CyberPatrol, FilterGate, and WebSense". This PDF document can be found in the topic area Internet Filtering in the Policies, Procedures, and Manuals section.

And some fresh new links under a few longtime topics.....

"Library Law: Constitutional and Unconstitutional Patron Appearance and Behavior Policies: A Review" is an article from a law firm in the Chicago area; a link to it has been added under Patron Behavior in the Policies, Procedures and Manuals section.

"Background Checks on Volunteers" is another summary document based on a survey. This one was done by Jackie Griffin at Ventura County Library System. To view it, choose Volunteerism under Model Projects/Best Practices.

Finally, useful links about Playaways:

They're new and they're here, probably at a library near you! Playaways are audio books already loaded on a small player. They are being circulated at many libraries. Examples of libraries' policies and promotions on "Playaways" can be found under Equipment Loan in the Policies, Procedures, and Manuals section.

Does your library have useful policies to share? Or perhaps a jazzy online annual report for all to see? The resourceroundup.net online clearinghouse of the Rural Library Initiative would love to include them. Please email link information to the new editor, Nancy Brower, at booklady@comcast.net.
The Rural Library Resources Clearinghouse is a component of the California State Library's Rural Library Initiative, an LSTA-funded project to direct additional resources to geographically isolated libraries in the state. After you visit the Clearinghouse, be sure and visit the Rural Library Initiative website at www.rurallibraries.org. The site offers California rural libraries convenient one-stop shopping for:

Internships at the Beinecke Library at Yale - Summer 2008]

Please find below an exciting paid internship opportunity at the
Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale this summer.

The folks organizing these new internships are particularly
interested in recruiting applicants from professionally
under-represented groups. I am working with this planning group to
publicize the internships specifically to ALA's ethnic caucuses, the
Spectrum Scholar program, the ARL Diversity Scholars, and to library
schools that that have particular programs aimed at mentoring and
educating students from under-represented backgrounds (Knowledge River
at U of A, Emporia, UBC's First Nations Library program). If anyone
can pass along additional contacts, that would be wonderful, but
please feel free to forward this announcement yourself-- and if you
are a student, consider applying!

The internship would be an excellent opportunity for students
interested in academic librarianship, special collections, archives,
cataloging, preservation, metadata, and general technical services.
The skills learned in these internships would also be transferable to
other contexts, such as a tribal library/archives. The Beinecke has a
growing collection of archival and printed materials documenting
Native American literature, and rich historical collections relating
to Native American peoples. More information about the collections is
online at http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke/brblinfo/brblguide.html

I am happy to answer informal queries about the program and about
working at the Beinecke. Please feel welcome to contact me off-list at
kathleen.burns@yale.edu

Please spread the word!
BEINECKE RARE BOOK & MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - SUMMER
2008

Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library welcomes
applications from current graduate students in library science,
information studies, preservation, archives or a related program for
its newly constituted internship program. The program has been
designed to provide practical experience to current graduate students
interested in pursuing a career in technical services in a special
collections setting.

The Beinecke Library, one of the world's largest buildings devoted
entirely to rare books and manuscripts, is Yale's principal repository
for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books as well as
strong collections of historial materials. Its collections are
internationally known and heavily used by scholars from around the
world. For further information about the Beinecke Library, consult the
library's web site at: http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke.

Responsibility for receiving, accessioning, processing and cataloging
as well as the preservation and conservation of materials in the
Beinecke, regardless of format, resides with the Technical Services
Department. Printed Acquisitions, Preservation, Manuscripts, Metadata
and indirectly the Rare Book Cataloging Team are all units in
Technical Services.

Interns will work in an area of their specific interest and have the
opportunity to learn more about how special collection libraries and
major research libraries are organized and function. Interns will
undertake and complete a project based on their interests, skills and
the needs of the Library.

The Beinecke Library has four internships available for the summer of
2008, and is looking to host an intern in each of the following areas
(see the list at end for additional details):

- Archival and manuscript processing
- Digital library and metadata development
- Preservation
- Rare book cataloging and acquisitions

Interns will work closely with staff in each of these areas and will
be integrated into the broader operations of the library through
tours, meetings with staff in the Beinecke Library and the Yale
University Library, and participation in special projects as available
and necessary.

Eligibility and requirements

- Applicants must be current graduate students in good standing in a
library science, information studies, preservation, archives or
related program
- Applicants must have completed at least three courses before the
start date of their internship
- Applicants must commit to 10 consecutive weeks of employment
between June 1st and August 31st, 2008
- At the end of the internship, interns will be required to submit a
final report describing their experiences or participate in an exit
interview
- Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
- Successful applicants will need to pass a security background check

Interns will receive a stipend of $7,500 to be used for housing,
travel and other expenses. The stipend will be divided into three
payments: one upon starting, the second halfway through and the third
upon completion of the internship.

The Library strongly encourages applicants from underrepresented
communities to apply.

Applicants should submit the items below by Feb. 29, 2008, with a
decision made in the beginning of April. Successful candidates will be
contacted in the beginning of April.
- Cover letter indicating internship area preference, as described
below
- Current resume
- Three letters of reference and contact information, including one
from your current institution
- List of completed classes (unofficial transcripts accepted)

Send these to:
If your library has rare cultural items or books that are treasures of
your culture, you might be interested in this message from the Alaska
State Library in Juneau. If you have any questions, please see the
contact information for Aja Razumny below. She will be glad to help
you.

If you know of another agency that is not a library that might have a
valuable collection, you might want to pass this information on to
someone there.
Subject: FW: Preservation of materials workshops

Here is a little more background and information that may help answer
some questions about the preservation workshop. Thanks for spreading the
word.

The Alaska Library Association is holding their annual conference in
Fairbanks this year, and we are piggy-backing Protecting Library &
Archive Collections: Disaster Preparedness, Response & Recovery on it as
a 'preconference', open to anyone. Workshop attendees do NOT need to pay
the AkLA Conference one-day registration fee to attend the Preservation
pre-conference, but WILL have to pre-register and pay $15.50 for the box
lunch. (You just cannot attend any other AkLA Conference events without
a regular conference registration.) To sign up, you might well have to
do a paper registration and fax it in, because the online registration
isn't set up to handle this exception. The registration form is on page
9 of the program booklet
http://www.akla.org/fairbanks2008/regbooklet.pdf

There will be a Part 2 of the preservation training offered in
Fairbanks, date to be determined

Part 1 of the workshop will be repeated in Juneau on April 9, 2008 &
Anchorage on April 11, 2008. (contact Arlene Schmuland
arlene@uaa.alaska.edu for details about the Anchorage sessions)

The second half of the training for Juneau and Anchorage will be held at
a later, date TBD.

General information about the AkLA conference is at
http://www.akla.org/fairbanks2008/index.php

and includes info about signing up for the workshop. Please let anyone
with questions feel free to contact me.
