October 9th AkLA-A Meeting - Aviation Museum Tour

Greetings AkLA-A!

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, October 9th at 4pm.

Norm Legasse, the Aviation Museum's director, will be providing us
with a tour of their exhibits. Afterwards we will also hold our
business meeting at the museum. Norm mentioned that they have a
potential volunteer library project they wanted to show us. Members
are also welcome to stay at the museum for further exhibit viewing
after our meeting.

The Aviation Museum is located at 4721 Aircraft Dr.

BizBee Table is Full!

Hello,

AkLA-A Dewey Decimators has a cheering section of 10 librarians for the Anchorage Literacy Program's Biz Bee on Friday, October 17th, at the Dena'ina Center from 6:30 - 10:00. Our table is full!

I have called the ALP and learned we could have another table for ten for $100. The two tables would probably not be situated together for the evening festivities. Before AkLA-A commits to the second table, please e-mail me at prockish@alaska.net if you would be interested in attending on the 17th to cheer on Nancy Clark, Talia Soto and Rick Henderson. We would need 10 more members/ friends to cheer at the second table.

Hello,

AkLA-A has a table for ten to support our Dewey Decimators. The tickets for the table are $10 per seat. Seven tickets have already been purchased so there are 3 seats left. Join Nina Prockish, Kathy Kiddell, Karen Keller, Marie Lundstrom, Mollie Bynum, Sallie Bynum and Stetson Momosor in cheering our spellers, Nancy Clark, Rick Henderson, and Talia Soto.

One AkLA-A member has purchased the $100 word pass. Another member has contributed $30 towards the 2nd word pass for $200. We will "pass the word pass hat" at the meeting on Thursday, October 9th, at 4:15 for further contributions. If you wish to contribute toward a word pass and cannot attend the meeting on the 9th, please contact prockish@alaska.net

Call for Volunteers for Mountain View Library

APL Vista Volunteer Rachel Rogers is looking for volunteers for a fun project. You can email her if you want to help out�

Help the Mountain View Public Library and Get Free Food in Return!
Volunteers are needed from 10am-3pm on Saturday, October 4th to conduct a door-to-door survey of Mountain View residents for the Anchorage Public Library (rain or shine!). We need 15-20 volunteers. Volunteers will receive training and instruction on the project and canvassing techniques. Volunteers need to be able to stand and walk for the duration of the project and will need transportation to and from the Anchorage Community Land Trust Offices at 3142 Mountain View Drive. Food and drinks are provided.

Hi, everyone:

I had to dash the second it was over, but it was a good event.

One comment I wanted to send to everyone: If that candidate really reads details, facts and footnotes, he is an unusual person. What people read these days is bullet points; and usually only three at a time.

I am forever having to re-write, taking out references and details, to make a web page or brochure or email readable. Shorter, more concise, lots of white space -- those are the requirements.

We might want to have the references available on request, but if we document everything we say, and our paper is 20 pages, it won't be read and it won't help us.

If you were at the first ever legislative forum held by the Anchorage Chapter of AkLA last night at UAA Consortium Library, this message is for you –

Do you have any ideas or suggestions for how we could have improved the event?

One person has already suggested that we give attendees a list of candidates so she could make notes about the person and their views – sort of a baseball type scorecard.

Reminder – Library Legislative Candidate Forum this Sunday

Dear Anchorage Library Colleague:

If you are passionate about the importance of libraries in community life, then please mark your calendar for first-ever legislative candidate forum and reception hosted by the Anchorage Chapter of the Alaska Library Association!

We need a big turnout to make sure that our current and future legislators know that their active support for libraries is essential to a large group of committed Anchorage voters.

Forum and reception details:

Date: Sunday September 21, 2008

Forum: 6 - 7 PM

Wine and cheese reception: 7 - 7:30 PM (or so)

Location: UAA Consortium Library, Room 307

Note: Parking is free at UAA on the weekends

The purpose of this forum is to give legislative candidates an opportunity to address issues that affect libraries, library users and library staff in Anchorage. While we have sent invitations to every legislative candidate from Anchorage and Eagle River, we expect to host only about 20 candidates. In order to give each candidate an opportunity to speak, we are planning on having each candidate draw questions about library issues out of a hat. The news media will be invited to the event.

Please plan to attend this forum and feel free to bring your spouse or anyone else who is significant to you. Mollie Bynum, Claire Stockert, and I are planning this event. We believe that this forum will be a great opportunity to educate candidates about issues facing the community of Anchorage library users and to educate library supporters about candidates' views on libraries.

As an additional incentive, we will be offering door prizes.

     AkLA-A is once again participating in the Anchorage Literacy Project's Biz Bee. It will be held on October 17th at the new Dena'ina Center beginning at 6:30 PM.
     Our Biz Bee spellers for AkLA-A this year will be: Nancy Clark, Natalia Soto and Rick Henderson. Nancy and Rick are Librarians with Anchorage Public Libraries and Talia is the Librarian at Charter College.
