Anchorage Library Foundation Seeks Board Members

The Anchorage Library Foundation works to promote, fund, and support the long-term vitality of the Anchorage Public Library. Each member of our board believes that free access to well-funded public libraries is vitally important to the long-term prosperity, success, and well-being of our community and its citizens. We are filling two open seats in 2010. The number one qualification is a passion for libraries. All backgrounds and skills will be considered, but we are especially interested in applicants with specific skills in accounting/financial management, nonprofit management, fundraising or marketing/PR.

[Anchorage Chapter - AKLA] Anchorage Library Volunteers Requested for Sorting Project

As some of you already know, UAA student Kato Ha’unga is working to establish the first public library back in her home country of Tonga. She presented at the January AKLA-A meeting where some of you heard more details of her story. You can read her story here: http://www.adn.com/2010/01/31/1118930/uaa-student-helps-tonga-gain-a.html

Kato is now ready to start sorting her book collection and prepare it for shipping. She could really use the help of librarians to help sort and give her other advice on how to prepare the collection for the library. The books are in storage at the old Gottschalks in the Northway Mall.

She has next week off for spring break and plans to work on the collection, starting this Saturday. If you are able to lend her a hand, you can coordinate a time to volunteer by contacting her at: northernlightslibrary@gmail.com

Hello:

I just received a request from Mike McCormick at Student Activities for help with ushering the Sherman Alexie event on Thursday (yes, tomorrow) night at 7:30 PM. Apparently he is having difficulty getting students to help because of mid-terms. This would be a way to attend the event FOR FREE and it should be really fun. The event is expected to sell out. The commitment would begin at 5:45 PM (the house will open at 6:00 PM). If you (or a friend or family member) are interested in helping, please call or email me today.

We have about 100 extra tickets to the Sherman Alexie event at 7:30 PM on Thursday March 4 at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium. We can sell you (and your family and friends) tickets to this event at the AkLA price of $10. If you are not familiar with Mr. Alexie, he is a Native American poet and writer and he wrote the screenplay for "Smoke Signals." He is an excellent speaker and is extremely funny. I know you and your friends and family will enjoy the event!

If you are interested in purchasing tickets please contact Dawn in the Alaska Medical Library (2nd floor of the Consortium Library, 786-1870) and make arrangements to pay for and pick up your tickets. Get set, get ready… READ! AkLA-A will participate in Anchorage Reads, the one book/one community reading program sponsored by the Anchorage Public Library. This year’s selected book is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Copies of the book are of course available through APL—so get a copy, read up and join us for a book discussion on Thursday, February 11^th in the Ann Stevens Room at the Loussac Library from 4:00-5:30pm. A book discussion guide has been prepared and will be available on the APL Facebook page.
