RE: Readers on the Run!

Thanks. We have a lot of fun with them. The music festival went fairly
well--not big enough crowds, but we did make more than last year, and
will be able to pay for heating oil and rent, which was our basic goal.

If you do a Readers on the Run sort of thing, keep us posted. We can
always use ideas to refine our own fundraisers, or new ideas to keep
our fundraisers lively.

BCR Welcomes New Digital Initiatives Trainer

AURORA, Colo. — Anne Marie Lyons has joined BCR as digital initiatives trainer, filling a newly created position in BCR Training & OCLC Services. She also will be working with BCR’s new Digital Preservation Services division, expanding the digitization training opportunities available to BCR members and others throughout the cultural heritage and library communities.

Of her new position, Lyons says, “Digital projects present different challenges to different organizations. I’m very much looking forward to working with archives, libraries, museums and cultural heritage organizations, and exploring how digitization practices can be adapted to each organization’s individual needs so they have new opportunities to share their wonderful collections with the rest of world.”

Before joining BCR, Lyons worked for National Public Radio and the National Security Archive, Washington, D.C. Her library experience includes work at the Van Deusen Post Library, the Picatinny Arsenal and Rutgers University, all in New Jersey. She earned her MLIS at Rutgers and her BA in English at the College of Saint Elizabeth.

As digital initiatives trainer, Lyons will be conducting online and in-person training in digital project planning, digital capture, metadata schemas and digital preservation. She has extensive experience in training and digital practices, and as BCR’s newest staff member, is a valuable addition to both the expanding digitization and training program and the BCR team.

Now that fall is officially here, the division of Libraries, Archives and Museums would like to send a big thank you to all of the people who worked with us to help make Alaska’s treasures available and understood by visitors and Alaskan patrons alike. We depend upon volunteers, docents and board members and it’s good to take a few moments to appreciate the work they do. Thanks to those who serve on library, archives and museum boards and committees; those who join Friends groups, work in Museum stores, act as docents greeting people and giving tours, or volunteer for short-term or long-term projects, such as guest curators of special exhibits.

DISASTER AID GUIDE

(From Heritage newsletter, DNR, September 2008) Heritage Preservation has published a Guide to Navigating Federal Emergency Management Agency and Small Business Administration Disaster Aid for Cultural Institutions. The booklet is designed to help historic properties and sites, museums, libraries and archives obtain funding to help recover from major disasters. It summarizes recovery funding regulations, policies and procedures, and includes the necessary forms. The guide is available online at www.heritagepreservation.org and print copies can be requested by calling 888.979.2233.

PRESERVATION RESOURCE GUIDE

(From Heritage newsletter, DNR, September 2008) A resource guide for historic preservation has been compiled by Tim Cannan, President of PreservationDirectory.com, and is available for free. “Preservation Resources on the Web” includes primary online resources. It emphasizes resources in Oregon, but has resources of interest to historic home owners and preservationists everywhere. PUT YOUR LIBRARY ON THE (GOOGLE) MAP

People use Google all the time to search for businesses. Why shouldn't they find your library there as well!? Google Local Business Center is a free resource that puts your library on the map with all the detail and information you'd like to share with the world. Tag your library as "Library", "Public Library", "College Library" and so on so that someone in your area can find you without knowing your library's specific name. Include your hours, contact information, and a short blurb about how great you are. Add photos and link to videos about your library on YouTube. Include any additional details you feel are worth knowing: do you offer wireless internet access; do you have any special collections or services worth noting; how large is your collection?

Once you've verified your information by phone or mail, your library will show up with a full profile on Google Maps, showing off all that great information right where your users are looking for it. You could even add coupons that your users can print out and use: "Redeem this coupon at your library for thousands of free books, movies, and other great services!" This service will improve the findability and visibility of any library. Use requires a free Google account. Check it out at www.google.com/local/add/. AN ERROR IN AN ALASKA MAP

Some may be aware of this already. The 1998 edition of Alaska in Maps: A Thematic Atlas, by Roger W. Pearson and Marge Hermans, published by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (OCLC#41668214), has a major error. For those maps which include the Arctic Circle, it is incorrectly drawn (north of Kotzebue). There is a 2000 printing with corrections. If you have the earlier title and printing, you may wish to either order the corrected version or include an erratum notice.

SCOTT CARRLEE IS AASLH COUNCIL MEMBER

Scott Carrlee, Curator of Museum Services, Alaska State Museum, has been elected to a four-year term on the Council for the American Association for State and Local History. AASLH, with over 6,000 members, is the leading national organization for small museums and local historical societies. Its training, publications, awards and other programs help groups and individuals preserve and interpret state and local history and make the past more meaningful to all Americans. The organization is governed and guided by the 20-member council. We’re proud of you, Scott!

Tickets to Kodiak

As you may have noticed Alaska Airlines has decided not to extend PFD fares to the “spring break” period for next March. Coincidentally and unfortunately, this is the only time we could schedule use of the school in Kodiak. We have had our dates selected for several years now.

We are working with Alaska Airlines to establish a discount code for conference goers. Yesterday I was informed that that “deal” will be ready in a week or two. It will probably consist of the usual 10% off the regular fare.

I would advise you to wait until this agreement is in place before purchasing your ticket. I believe we will get a better deal by doing so.

Additionally, our agreement with Alaska Airlines will also probably include the generation of several free tickets to conference. We will probably get one free ticket for every 40 purchasers who use the discount code. These free tickets will be used to bring in speakers and help keep conference costs down.

I urge everyone to use this code once we distribute it and to send in your ticket number to me once purchased.

Sara Jaffarian Award recognizes excellence in school library programming

Nominations accepted through Dec.1

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is now accepting nominations for the 2009 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming.

School libraries, public or private, that serve children in any combination of grades K-8 and have conducted humanities programs during the 2007-2008 school year are eligible. Applications and award guidelines are available at www.ala.org/jaffarianaward. To be considered, nominations must be received by ALA by Dec. 1.

The award consists of a $4,000 honorarium and a plaque, to be presented at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Additionally, the winning program will be promoted as a model program for other school libraries. To be considered, applicant libraries must have conducted a humanities program or program series during the prior school year (2007-2008). The humanities program can be focused in many subject areas, including but not limited to social studies, poetry, drama, art, music, language arts, foreign language and culture. Programs should focus on broadening perspectives and helping students understand the wider world and their place in it. They should be initiated and coordinated by the school librarian and exemplify the role of the library program in advancing the overall educational goals of the school.

The Sara Jaffarian Award was established in 2006 to recognize and promote excellence in humanities programming in elementary and middle school (K-8) libraries. It is presented annually by the Public Programs Office, in cooperation with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and named for Sara Jaffarian, whose donation to ALA's Cultural Communities Fund established the award. Jaffarian, a retired school librarian and long-time ALA member, spent her career passionately advocating for school libraries in every school. The Sara Jaffarian Award is selected annually by a committee comprising members of the ALA Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee (PCPAC) and AASL. PLA now accepting proposals for 2010 National Conference
PLA is now accepting preconference and program proposals for its 12th National Conference, to be held March 23-27, 2008 in Portland, Oregon. Proposals may be submitted through an online form, available on the PLA 2010 Conference Web site. Faxed, e-mailed, or mailed proposals will not be accepted.
Proposals may be created and updated until November 30, 2008. After November 30, the form will no longer be available, and new proposals will not be accepted. A committee appointed by the PLA president will review all submitted proposals and select conference programs based on their relevance to the profession and general interest to conference attendees. The committee is chaired by Kathleen R.T. Imhoff. Organizers will be notified whether or not proposals are accepted in March 2009.
All programs at the PLA conference are 75 minutes long. Preconferences can be one-half day, one-day or one-and-a-half days long. Program topics will include: Facilities, Collections, Staff, Technology, Leadership, Adult Services, Adult Programs, Children's Services, Young Adult Services, Information/Reference Services, Special Populations, Technical Services, Marketing/Fund-raising/Partnerships, Partnerships, Administration/Management, and Reader's Advisory.

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) is pleased to offer the online course: "From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet" - by popular demand, a second special session for public and other libraries in the Pacific Northwest only! Learn how to evaluate health information sites on the Internet using the following criteria: Accuracy, Authority, Bias, Currency and Coverage.

This course has been offered four times in the past two years and has been very well-received. Participants will receive 3 Medical Library Association continuing education contact hours that can be applied to their Consumer Health Information Specialization - http://www.mlanet.org/education/chc/

Nikki Dettmar - Acting Education and Assessment Coordinator, will be facilitating the course. The course is asynchronous, meaning you can work at your own pace via a private class website, with the exception of a live web conference that will take place on Monday, October 20th at 10am Pacific. An optional final project is available if you an unable to attend the conference... we understand the demands of library scheduling!

There are only 8 remaining spaces left due to the waitlist from the previous class in July-August, and this announcement is posted to 5 state library lists. Please respond directly to snydern@u.washington.edu as soon as possible to register! A wait list will be maintained for the next offering of the class, tenatively scheduled for January 2009.
