OCLC Updates and Special Offers: Cataloging and Metadata

View the OCLC meeting recordings from ALA Midwinter 2010

We’re happy to inform you that the recordings are now available for many of the OCLC meetings held during last month’s ALA 2010 Midwinter Meeting. We invite you to visit the Web site, choose a meeting from the list and click one of the hotlinks to listen to the recording and view the presentation slides. Afterwards, we encourage you to share the information with your colleagues.

OCLC meetings include:

·         Redesigning Technical Services Workflows – Leaders in the global technical services community share their perspectives on the theme, “Dollars and sense: paying for the collaborative national bibliographic framework.” Karen Calhoun, Vice President, WorldCat and Metadata Services provided an introduction. Alasdair Ball, Head of Collection Acquisition and Description, British Library, presented, “Dollars and Sense – Paying for the collaborative national bibliographic framework.” Ruth Fischer, R2 Consulting LLC, presented, “Library of Congress Study of the North American MARC Records Marketplace,” and Brian E. C. Schottlaender, The Audrey Geisel University Librarian, UC San Diego, presented, “The University of California Next-Generation Technical Services Initiative,” followed by a question and answer session.

·         WorldCat Selection Users Group – Joseph Hafner, Associate Director, Collection Services and Diane Koen, Associate Director, Planning and Resources, McGill University Library, describe McGill’s implementation of WorldCat Selection.

·         WorldCat: New Dimensions in Growth and Quality – Work that libraries and OCLC are doing together to build and enrich WorldCat, including synchronizing local library collections and WorldCat, enhances metadata management activities and discoverability of library collections on the Web.

·         Single-search access to your library’s electronic resources from OCLC – Learn how your library can offer single-search access to your print, electronic and digital resources through WorldCat.org, WorldCat Local and WorldCat Local “quick start.” Presented by Matt Goldner, Product and Technology Advocate, OCLC.

·         Reaching Consumers through Nontraditional Methods: What can WorldCat do for You? – An interactive panel of librarians, library users and industry leaders share strategies of how WorldCat.org helps them reach consumers, researchers, developers and partner organizations through social tools, mobile apps, APIs and more.

·         Web Scale for Libraries: A Sea-change for the 21st Century – Web-scale Management Services will move crucial library services and associated data to the network—sometimes called “the cloud”—freeing library systems and staff to perform other high priority tasks. New network-level functionality will include cooperative services for circulation and deliver, print and licensed acquisitions, and license management. These will complement existing Web-scale services for cataloging (WorldCat) and discovery (WorldCat Local). Presented by Andrew K. Pace, Executive Director, Networked Library Services OCLC.

Additional meetings are also available for viewing, including the OCLC Update, OCLC Symposium and more.
