POWER: Building Partnerships for Learning

National guidelines for school library media programs and
information literacy standards for student learning

New "INFORMATION POWER" Book, Guidelines, and Standards

by Roz Goodman, updated by Jan Fortune

Are you aware? Do you have a copy? Have you read it?
Are you celebrating? Have you shared it?

What are the new guidelines and standards?
In her summary of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, Marilyn Miller ("Information Power: Building Partnerships For Learning", Knowledge Quest, Volume 2, Number 1/September/October l998, pg. 14-16-18.) highlights the following key points:
  1. Student learning is the central focus upon which IP2 was developed. Student achievement is the bottom line.
  2. Information literacy is the keystone of lifelong learning and the school library media specialist today focuses on the process of learning rather than the dissemination of information.
  3. The library media program combines effective learning and teaching strategies and activities with information access skills.
  4. IP2 is organized into two parts- a vision and philosophy for library media programs and information literacy standards for student learning.
  5. The school library media specialist is an education keystone whose roles are teacher, instructional partner, information specialist and program administrator.
  6. IP2 presents 27 principles and the library media specialist behaviors necessary for the development of a quality library media program.
  7. IP2 calls for a local plan of action. We must all get involved and spread the word about the importance of our role and library media resources in the lives of our children.
What is AkASL doing to promote implementation of the new guidelines and standards?
The following activities have been proposed to help Alaskan School Librarians become IP2 savvy and begin thinking about how they will implement the standards in their own school library situations.
  1. Include articles in the Puffin with up to date information on IP, pointers to articles and other IP2 information resources, references to what other states are doing, and what Alaska school library folks are doing with the new standards.
  2. Circulate copies of the Information Power video (contact Sue Sherif at the State Library) .
  3. Provide time to discuss Information Power during AKLA conferences.
  4. Create a power point presentation on the standards to be used at other disciplinary conferences ie. School Board, Principal's, ASTE., etc.
AKASL proposes the following recommendations for implementation: What should school librarians in Alaska be doing with the new guidelines and standards?
  1. Get your hands on a copy of Information Power Building Partnerships For Learning and make time to read through each chapter. Study the guidelines and standards for what they say and what they imply. Digest and ponder the implications of this document to the school library program in your school, school district and school libraries throughout Alaska. What changes need to be made in our existing programs to enable us to comply with the vision and philosophy of the new standards and guidelines?
  2. Determine what is most important in this document that needs to be implemented at the state level, in your school district and in your own school library.
  3. Share your "thinking" via e-mail notes to Jan Fortune.
  4. Let Jan or E-Board members know your concerns about the new standards. Identify what kinds of things AkASL can do to help you and your school district implement the standards.
  5. Think of ways to share awareness with other school librarians around the state.
