Bonnie CavannaughWasilla Middle School, WasillaThanks to our Follett Library Resources representative, Lisa McClusky, who joined us to help present the AkASL School Librarian of the Year Award, and a $500 bonus check! Bonnie received a notebook full of accolades, the letter of support, and forty-two (42) staff members signed up to support her nomination. Bonnie was described as a “Central Staff Member” at her school who has worked to change the school culture toward one that celebrates the skill and the will to read; She builds partnerships within the school; She is involved in the educational team; 800 students visit her library weekly during assigned times; Alphabetically, these descriptors were used to describe her; amazing, book expert, competent, exemplary, inspirational, page pusher, phenomenal, research specialist, tireless, web-site designer, “will stop at nothing to assist a teacher, providing the proper text, media, book level or genre for their class.” Get out your tissues for this eloquent expression of admiration, “She has traveled the world with students, taken them to the moon and helped them go places they never imagined.” Can you say, “SHREDFEST”!? The Alaska Association of School Librarians gives an annual award to an Alaska school librarian who: • Operates a library program that strives toward the goals set forth in Information Power. • Promotes the development of independent lifetime readers and learners. • Is a certified librarian currently working in a library position. • Is an integral part of the educational team. • Exemplifies professional involvement by sharing expertise with colleagues both locally and around the state. • Demonstrates professionalism by being a member of AkASL and other professional organizations. Each school year, administrators, educators, and librarians are encouraged to nominate a school librarian who has been a help and inspiration to them. Each librarian nominated receives a certificate of recognition from the Association. A special award certificate is presented to the person named the School Librarian of the Year.

The Alaska Association of School Librarians offers annual recognition to school administrators who support School Library Information Programs and contribute to the advancement of the School Librarian as an agent for raising student achievement. The adminstrator should demonstrate: • Leadership in advocating for library media staff, facilities, collection, equipment and staff development opportunities. • Support for library media services that provide learning opportunities and curriculum support for all students. • Promotion of library information programs. Eligibility: Administrators who beneficially impact school libraries at any level. Nominations may be made by building or district level school librarians.
